On September 23, 2023, UMSU had the honor of being represented by its Office of International Cooperation (OIC) at a historic ceremony celebrating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. This momentous occasion was a vibrant display of international unity and cultural exchange, drawing together consuls general from multiple nations, including the United States, Malaysia, and Thailand, as well as prominent leaders from the Chinese community in North Sumatra. The event also saw the presence of the acting governor of North Sumatra, underscoring its significance on both local and international levels.
The celebration was a dazzling showcase of culture and tradition, featuring captivating performances that highlighted the richness of both Chinese and Indonesian heritage. Spectators were treated to the exhilarating sight of lion dances and martial artistry in wushu, as well as unique film dubbing demonstrations. Traditional dances such as Zue Long and Saman, performed by talented students ranging from kindergarten to high school in Medan, further enriched the cultural tapestry of the evening, symbolizing the deep connection between the two nations.
In his keynote address, Consul General Zhang Min underscored the flourishing relationship between Indonesia and China, pointing to numerous areas of cooperation that continue to grow. Among the most exciting developments announced during the event was the collaboration between China and UMSU to establish the China Corner—a key milestone in the journey toward launching a Confucius Institute. This initiative will not only promote deeper cultural understanding but also facilitate academic and language exchanges, enriching both institutions and communities.
