The Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Medan and Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU) officially launched the “Chinese Corner” on Friday, September 13, 2024, at the UMSU Library, 3rd Floor, located on Jalan Muchtar Basri No.3, Medan. This significant event marks a new chapter in fostering educational and cultural cooperation between Indonesia and China.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by a host of distinguished guests, emphasizing the importance of this initiative. Among the attendees were UMSU Vice Rector 3, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rudianto, M.Si, who represented UMSU Rector Prof. Dr. Agussani, MAP; Deputy Consul General of China in Medan, Xu Chunjuan; the wife of the Chinese Consul General, Liu Yuqing; Consul Attaché Cheng Tong; Principal of MAN 1 Medan, Reza Faisal, S.Pd., M.PMAT; Chairperson of the Office of International Cooperation (OIC) UMSU, Rafieqah Nalar Rizky, S.Sos., M.A.; and Head of the UMSU Library, Dr. Muhammad Arifin, M.Pd.
The establishment of the Chinese Corner is a collaborative effort to enhance mutual understanding and promote cultural exchange between the two nations. It serves as a resource hub, providing students and the local community with access to Chinese language learning materials, literature, and cultural resources. This initiative is expected to play a vital role in deepening the educational ties between UMSU and Chinese institutions, while also promoting the study of Chinese language and culture among UMSU students.
In her speech, Zhang Min, the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Medan, represented by Deputy Consul General Xu Chunjuan, conveyed her heartfelt appreciation for the concrete progress made through the partnership with UMSU. She highlighted the Chinese Corner as a testament to the strengthening relationship between Indonesia and China, particularly in the fields of education and culture. Zhang Min expressed hope that the Chinese Corner would inspire more students to engage in cross-cultural learning and foster deeper bonds of friendship between the two countries.
The Chinese Corner is poised to become a key platform for academic and cultural exchange, paving the way for future collaborations and greater understanding between Indonesia and China. Through this initiative, UMSU continues to demonstrate its commitment to providing students with global learning opportunities and broadening their horizons beyond the local context.
